EVANS IMPRESSES

A 2-2 draw against Cardiff City which was played on the last day of the season of the Football League granted Hull City the chance to make their return to the Premier League and now they are playing the best teams in England, having won 4 matches out of 12 they are sitting in the 13th spot with 14 points.

Despite their fairly respectable place in the Premier League, fans of the club are unhappy with the latest decision from the owner Assem Allam as he already spoke of his desire to rebrand the club and change the name.

‘’Hull City Association Football Club’’ has been the name of the club for 109 years but according to Assem the name was just too long and he also disliked the word ‘’City’’ as it is too common and boring “Hull Tigers” is the name that the club will be changed to as of January of next year.

The 74 years old owner of the club said that branding the name of club shorter will be easier to be recognized and just not have the same style and format that most other clubs have. Assem also said that the club suffered from a £28m loss and changing the name will help the club not only to be renowned around the world but also financially despite the claims from fans saying that instead of changing the name they should focus on upgrading and developing their stadium further.

“Manchester United are selling shirts in the far east,” Allam says, “selling commercial activities all over the world. We need the club to be known globally, and shortening the name will make the club known globally.”

PROGRESS

Blackburn Rovers have made good progress in the league in the last few weeks, which has delighted manager Gary Bowyer. The team are currently ninth in the table just five points off the top six places, which will be the play-off positions. Bowyer was given the task of getting the club back into the Premier league after their failure to do so last season. He has made some signings over the summer in order to strengthen the squad, and they seem to be clicking at just the right stage in the season.

One of the signings has been Hull City’s Corry Evans, who has formed a great partnership with Lowe in the midfield, and Bowyer reserved his praise for the youngster. Blackburn have won the last two matches in the league against Bournemouth and Watford. They will be going into the weekend knowing that hat-trick of victories will put them even closer towards the top six. Wigan will be the opponents during the weekend. Blackburn are undefeated in the last three matches and they have conceded just one goal in this period.

Midfielder Lowe has said that there is no reason that Blackburn can think about three points prior to the match against Wigan because they have been in good form over the last few weeks.

“We’ve said all along that Corry’s fitness levels would get better and better with games and credit to him and the sports science team and the medical team for increasing his fitness levels in-season. With having so many games that can be quite difficult, but we’ve managed to do that. He’s only going to get better and better,” said Bowyer about his summer signing ahead of the match with Wigan. After this encounter, Blackburn have matches against the likes of Blackpool, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Middlesbrough.

HULL KEEN ON FIGUEROA

Hull City manager Steve Bruce was responsible for bringing a number of South Americans to the Premier league when he was the manager at Birmingham and Wigan athletic. Maynor Figueroa is one of those players who was brought to English football back in 2008. Now a free agent, the former Wigan player has decided to join Bruce at Hull City and he has said that he is already delighted at the prospect of working with the former Manchester United defender once again. After being sacked by Sunderland, Bruce took over at Championship Hull City and he got into the Premier league through the automatic places.

In order to survive in the Premier league, Bruce is keen on revamping the squad by bringing in players with ability experience. Maynor Figueroa is someone who fits the bill exactly, while the 31-year-old is also available on a free transfer after his contract with Wigan came to an end. Aside from wanting to play in the Premier league, Figueroa has said that the chance to work with Bruce once again proved tough to disregard. Figueroa is the second signing for the club after they brought in the Peterborough man George Boyd on a loan deal only recently.

“When the team were playing the final few games in the Championship, I paid close attention to the results because I wanted Steve Bruce to achieve promotion. I was happy for him to earn the success. He is a great manager and I’m looking forward to working with him again,” said Figueroa after signing a new two-year contract with the club. It is understood that Wigan tried their best to keep the Honduras international, but he was too keen on playing in the Premier league. He is one of the several departures from the DW stadium after their relegation.
